This guy’s photography is just dripping in color. Literally, the color is dripping off his subjects. Check out his site too (some NSFW) for some other series, including “Brasileiros” and some of his commercial and fashion work.

The $40,000 Synthesizer
Posted by QuenchPops | Filed under Stick it in your ear.

Buchla, designers of unusual electro-acoustic instruments, recently released a series of synthesizers built upon the engineering and electronic experimentation of the 1970s. The major difference between these synths today and the 70s is their ridiculous price tag. I’m sure it’s worth every penny if you have that kind of money, but it is most likely only going to be seen in a major label setting with groups like Fischerspooner or Amon Tobin or some huge electronic artist, not a regular musician. I don’t even know if a major label artist would buy on of these, but they do look badass and I can’t imagine what they sound like. You gotta hand it to companies that are so passionate about a product that they push their vision way beyond the limits of anybody else.
One commenter on electronic music news site Synthtopia nails it exactly: “Thirty-six grand is nothing compared to the glass-floored room jutting over the Mediterranean it’ll be sitting in. And the girls bringing in trays of elegant snack food aren’t cheap either. And their hi-heels clatter on the glass floor so much! But that’s nothing compared to the sheer guilt that I’ll be forever guilty of funding the whole enterprise - jet skis and all - from that wretched, silly, three-minute pop song. I know, I’ll write an album about how rotten and distorting it is to be rich and famous. But first, three interviews and a photo shoot with Shakira. Actually, I don’t need the most expensive version. All I want is the one with the circle of buttons on it.”
Here’s some other models of the 200e, the first one below being the full $40k setup:

The Value of our Elders and Ancestors
Posted by QuenchPops | Filed under Current Events, Off the beaten path
Last week, an 85 year old woman named Boa Sr, died off the coast of India in a chain of islands known as the Andaman Islands. She was the last member of the Bo people who inhabited the islands for 65,000 years, becoming the very last person to speak their ancient tongue, which “officials believe.. is probably the world’s only surviving Paleolithic people without contact with any other community.” As was the case with much of the 19th century, the British wiped out nearly all of 5,000 remaining Bos, with all 150 children born there at the time not surviving beyond the age of two. You can read the full story about the group bringing this to light, Survival International at their site, or the CNN article here. The following video is Boa Sr recounting the 2004 Tsunami which she survived, speaking the words of her ancient tongue, the last time her language will most likely ever be spoken again:

The Greatest CGI Ever: Alex Roman & Architecture as Art
Posted by QuenchPops | Filed under Art & Design
The following piece is 12-minutes long and is the greatest FULL computer generated imagery (CGI) I have ever seen… The piece is purely architecture based and makes Avatar look 5 years old. It’s 100% animated and was built in 3ds Max, V-Ray, After Effects and Premiere. This is Alex Roman’s “The Third and the Seventh.”

Please Help Haiti: UNICEF and the Stories on Twitter
Posted by QuenchPops | Filed under Current Events
15 January 2010
Two days ago, the potentially worst disaster in my lifetime hit the nation of Haiti. A 7.0 Earthquake devastated their nation’s capital. People are still stuck under the rubble, texting their loved ones “Where are you?” to no avail. One man trapped under his house even called his family in Brooklyn, which CNN featured on TV last night along with his address in Port-Au-Prince in hopes that the few rescue crews in the devastated city may save him. Millions of dollars have been raised, but many charities don’t have the open routes or possibility of going in yet.
As a Katrina evacuee, it brings me to my knees to think there are people yet again stranded for days after an event like this. Please, please donate to any charity with the resources to get in as soon as possible and start saving people. CharityNavigator.com is a great site that lists the most efficient, accredited charities. UNICEF and Doctor’s Without Borders are 4-out-of-4 stars, so I highly encourage you to donate to them.
In the meantime, please follow CNN’s Twitter feed here to realize how real this is.

Thanks to Ms. O’Neill for the tip on this guy. I don’t know if I want to lick his paintings, build them into birdhouses, or just eat mushrooms and stare at them. Beautiful. Also available at Visions Fine Art Gallery in Sedona, Arizona.

Ready, Able by Grizzly Bear and Allison Schulnik
Posted by QuenchPops | Filed under Art & Design, Stick it in your ear.
We featured Allison Schulnik on QuenchPad exactly a year ago, thanks to a tip from our friend Shannan Hayes. Allison was commissioned by Grizzly Bear to do one of their new videos for the song “Ready, Able” off their new album Veckatimest based on the previous QP post that Edward from Grizzly Bear found, so we thank Shannan again for this tip and the amazing work both Grizzly Bear and Allison Schulnik create.

Roxy Music Live
Posted by Slake! | Filed under Stick it in your ear.
This song “In every Dreamhome a Heartache” from Roxy Music’s For Your “Pleasure” album gets cut a little short before the best part gets to really build. Check out this live version. Wait for it…at 3:50 it gets worth the wait. The song was very timely for 80s excess, and was also nice right before the recession hit.

Artificial Paradise
Posted by QuenchPops | Filed under Art & Design
Belgian Director Jean-Paul Frenay directed the following short film. While his explanation doesn’t really pan out until the very end, it doesn’t really matter because the animation and sound design are so top notch. Here’s the description from JP: “Artificial Paradise, Inc is an experimental film anticipating a future where a major corporation has developed an unique software, based on organic virtual reality, which holds all the lost memories of humankind. A user connects to this database of the forgotten…what is he searching for?”

8 Bit Trip
Posted by QuenchPops | Filed under Art & Design, Yachts, Gadgets, & Bling
This is in the top 5 coolest online videos I’ve seen. Apparently it took 1500 hours to make, mostly involving stop motion lego building. Stop motion seems to be coming back, as I think this is the third or fourth QuenchPad post featuring it. I guess it’s the ridiculousness of setting up one frame, shooting it, and then doing that thousands upon thousands of other times with only the slightest change in image per shot. The music on this one’s pretty awesome too.
