Phosphorescent - Wolves

Here is a great Song by the Brooklyn Band, Phosphorescent. The Song is Wolves, performed live for KEXP.  The album version is pretty good, but I think this live version is superior.

and speaking of wolves….

Dixie, Bacon, Milk, Animal Collective Mix

I’m an amateur at film making so take this with a grain of salt, but I thought some closeup footage I’ve shot of my dog Dixie went nicely with “The Purple Bottle.”

mmmm, sprouts

Here is a nice recipe that David Chang from Momofuku restaurants was nice enough to make available to the world.  It mixes all the deliciousness of Brussells Sprouts with the fun of Rice Krispies.

For brussels sprouts

  • 2 pounds Brussels sprouts, trimmed and halved lengthwise
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 2 tablespoons unsalted butter

For dressing

  • 1/4 cup Asian fish sauce (preferably Tiparos brand)
  • 1/4 cup water
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 3 tablespoons finely chopped mint
  • 2 tablespoons finely chopped cilantro stems
  • 1 garlic clove, minced
  • 1 (1 1/2-inch) fresh red Thai chile, thinly sliced crosswise, including seeds

For puffed rice

  • 1/2 cup crisp rice cereal such as Rice Krispies
  • 1/4 teaspoon canola oil
  • 1/4 teaspoon shichimi togarashi (Japanese seven-spice blend)**
  • Garnish: cilantro sprigs; torn mint leaves; chopped scallions

Roast brussels sprouts:
Preheat oven to 450°F with rack in upper third.

Toss Brussels sprouts with oil, then arrange, cut sides down, in a 17- by 12-inch shallow baking pan. Roast, without turning, until outer leaves are tender and very dark brown, 40 to 45 minutes. Add butter and toss to coat.

Make dressing:
Stir together all dressing ingredients until sugar has dissolved.

Make puffed rice while sprouts roast:
Cook cereal, oil, and shichimi togarashi in a small skillet over medium heat, shaking skillet and stirring, until rice is coated and begins to turn golden, about 3 minutes. Transfer to a bowl and cool, stirring occasionally.

Finish dish:
Put Brussels sprouts in a serving bowl, then toss with just enough dressing to coat. Sprinkle with puffed rice and serve remaining dressing on the side.

**

hemp seeds, shelled
ground red chili powder
sansho (Szechuan peppercorns)
dried mandarin orange peel
toasted, shredded nori
poppy seeds
white sesame seeds

Mix equal parts of all seven spices and grind together. Try not to grind it to a fine powder, just enough to make the tougher ingredients like the orange peel edible.

or this if you have a hard time with the spice blend.

Movember: United We Believe

From Movember.com:

Men have thrived on challenges throughout history. The challenge to discover new lands, climb higher mountains and solve seemingly impossible tasks. It is now evident men need to unite and embrace a new challenge - to improve their collective health.

The aim of Movember is to change this attitude, make men’s health fun by putting the Mo (moustache) back on the face of fashion and in the process raise some serious funds for key men’s health issues.

So grow a mustache, donate some money, and help fight prostate cancer!

Props to Randy for the tip on Movember.
